Need
Fire safety has never been more critical for modern buildings, and new ways to keep people safe always need to be developed. In addition to the fire safety precautions builders and architects regularly take for their buildings, Smoke Out could give all citizens the confidence that they can find the quickest and best route out to safety, in the event of an emergency. Additionally, The National Fire Protection Agency can now have a tool to implement a national standard for fire safety, and a way to enlist all participating cities to provide fire safety information into a central database. Smoke Out is a step in the right direction.

From a smartphone, users can access Smoke Out to place the critical egress information directly onto their viewpoint by simply walking along the egress route. The information will adjust in real time to respond to the user's decisions. Some real time information about the extent and intensity of the fire can be shown, as well as alternate routes based on the changing conditions. This information, presented in a dynamic and experientially legible way, can provide extremely valuable new orientation methods to illuminate the safest escape routes so critically needed during fire events when halls and rooms fill with smoke and lights lose power. Users can also receive alerts for buildings where greater risks may have specific fire safety concerns and particular details can be provided prior to an event or gathering where egress is a serious concern.
