AR Oil
Augmented reality is a new computer interface that offers great promise for business and industry. While it was originally developed as a method for doctors to interface with technology during robotic surgical procedures, augmented reality now has the opportunity for widespread development and distribution. Apple and Android have recently introduced their AR development platforms, named ARKit and ARCore respectively, and this allows anyone with a smartphone or tablet to have access to the exciting features and advantages of augmented reality applications. Using the camera as the source of the interface, augmented reality has the potential to offer industries a comprehensive tool for organizing and identifying inventory, oversee equipment and processes, and identify personnel.
Augmented RealiTease is a leading full-service interactive multimedia developer that focuses on the design and development of augmented reality applications. They have developed a set of concepts geared to specific industries, and the AR Oil concept focuses on the needs of the oil industry. Using augmented reality to facilitate operations in and around an oil mining and storage facility, AR Oil is bound to become a valuable tool for the oil industry.
Need
Mining and distributing oil is a challenging business, requiring teams of personnel, heavy duty equipment and vehicles, and a set of production and post production processes associated with different grades of oil. AR Oil will allow users to scan the labels in an oil facility to determine its type, properties, and recommended uses, and many other industry-specific details. Floating text labels will appear dynamically in the camera view to caption and elucidate details of personnel, oil grades, mining equipment service and repair requirements, and more.
Benefit
AR Oil may prove to be a model for the future of oil plant management, with the potential to set a new standard for facilities management software. Augmented reality offers immediacy and interactivity, with detailed information customized to industry requirements.
Concept
Service ratings for passenger car and commercial automotive motor oils are classified by the American Petroleum Institute (API). The oils used in the first vehicles were labeled with an API SA Service Classification and, as classification systems evolved, the API introduced other iterations, including SB, SC, SD, and so on (skipping only SI and SK). The API Service Classification program certifies that an oil meets certain Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) quality and performance standards. Service ratings are shown in the API "Service Symbol Donut" on the product label. This labeling system forms the basis for AR Oil. A selected oil label can be scanned to acquire specific details concerning its properties and compatibility with vehicles and other equipment, which are then presented from within the mobile device camera view next to the scanned oil.
This basic premise creates the platform for a comprehensive suite of tools. Oil grades can be scanned for viscosity, purity, price per barrel, and more, to become an indispensable tool for efficient inventory management. Associated vehicles and mining equipment can be scanned to acquire details such as make and model numbers for specs and diagnostics, repair schedules, replacement parts, etc., which are then presented next to those vehicles and pieces of equipment for fast review upon scanning. AR Oil can also be set up to recognize different types of oil processing, and manage detailed information for progress reports, phasing, and scheduling. With its facial recognition component, AR Oil can also be used to facilitate personnel management and scheduling. Vehicles can be scanned by the app with recommendations for the best oil grades, and tankers can be scanned to acquire details such as capacity, current work orders, schedules, fuel status, and more.
